Anguilla - Geography

Anguilla is the most northerly of the Leeward Islands in the eastern Caribbean. It consists of the main island of Anguilla, approximately 26km long and a maximum of 5km wide together with a number of much smaller islands and cays with no permanent population. The total land area of the territory is 102 km² with a population of approximately 14,100 (2008 estimate).

Anguilla is noted for its spectacular and ecologically important coral reefs and enjoys clear seas and some of the best beaches in the region. The island itself is predominantly flat with thin and poor soil covered with low scrub.

Anguilla's capital and administrative centre is the Valley with a population of 1,400. Its primary ports of entry are Wallblake Airport and Blowing Point Ferry Terminal. The nearest neighbouring islands are French St. Martin and Dutch Saint Maarten 9km to the south and the British Virgin Islands 46km to the west.

Anguilla has a tropical though rather dry climate, moderated by northeast trade winds. Temperatures vary little throughout the year. Average daily maxima range from about 27 °C in December to 30 °C in July. Rainfall is erratic, averaging about 90 cm per year, the wettest months being September and October, and the driest February and March. Anguilla is vulnerable to hurricanes from June to November, peak season August to mid-October.
